In the olden days, there was a common joke in the trade that the producer of a flop film would say, “But my film is doing super-hit business in Bihar!” But like the proverbial story of ‘crying wolf’, there was occasionally some truth in a film doing region-specific good business, like Dil Ka Rishta (2003) doing well only in Gujarat or some action thrillers performing well in the Northern circuits. Singh Is Kinng (2008) and the recent Jug Jugg Jeeyo also did well in Punjab but did not impress elsewhere. There was also the matter of local identification, as a gangland film like Satya (1998) did well in the Mumbai circuit and fared disappointingly elsewhere.

However, there have been many films, especially in the millennium, that have been flops in India but have performed well abroad, especially in certain specific countries.

The latest film that is said to have achieved this is Laal Singh Chaddha, which is a colossal disaster in India. Says Yusuf Shaikh, Head, Feature Films Distribution, Acquisition and IPR Management of Percept Pictures: “Laal Singh… has become the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022 overseas. It has done a business of Rs 60 crore. But that is not a great amount, especially by Aamir Khan’s film standards.” Agrees trade analyst Taran Adarsh: “The fact is that, even abroad, Laal Singh Chaddha has underperformed.”

Secret Superstar (also produced by and starring Aamir Khan), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, My Name Is Khan, RA.One!, Dilwale, Baabul, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Blue, Main Prem Ki Deewani Hoon and Tubelight are among the films that did good to great business overseas after “tanking” in India.

What explains the difference between Indians back home and NRIs when it comes to film reception? Says Shaikh: “There is a captive audience waiting for Hindi films over there! They are hungry for Indian cinema, and they also connect with certain brands, like Yash Raj Films, Dharma Productions, Rajshri Productions and even Excel Entertainment. On weekends, the audience would love to go watch the latest Hindi film, and they prefer star-studded movies with songs and family values.”

Vinod Mirani, a senior trade analyst, refutes the claim and says, “The Indian audiences abroad, come USA, UK, Dubai or anywhere, are straitjacketed by budgets. The pricing of tickets overseas starts around $50. And there is a lot more to do there — in Indian entertainment alone, there are shows as well. So they will watch only movies that have a good buzz. Families have many other things to do, starting even with good English films!”

Taran Adarsh also contradicts Shaikh’s claim of a “captive” audience willing to lap up anything, and says, “Primarily, it is content that matters—an action-oriented Dilwale will never do as well as a Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, for example. Then it is also certain stars — all the Khans, Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, who are their favourites. Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn, however, are appreciated only as per to their movies’ content, like Good Newzz did brilliant business.”

But he does mention that the audience there is what is known as a “class” audience. “The subject of a film like Kabhi Alvida... was rejected by audiences in India. But over there, the audience went for the content—they understood the look at marriages and divorces. The same applies to My Name Is Khan and Secret Superstar, which interestingly did brilliant business in China. The audience there thus also looks beyond the typical Hindi film, towards mature subjects.”

A senior trade analyst, on condition of anonymity, scoffs at the collection figures, especially in China, of Secret Superstar, dismissing them as “Aamir Khan’s PR machinery, because no media or audience can check them even if they do have the inclination. But I look only at actual figures.” Adarsh, however, insists that the film did garner great success, and did exceedingly well even in the US and Australia, to give just two examples, despite underperforming in India.

This analyst maintains that the dull phase is also because the novelty of a star has worn off. “When stars are seen everywhere and are accessible even on a mobile phone, how can people retain the desire to watch them. Earlier, everyone was interested in their life, now all that is known!”

Shaikh notes that Yash Raj Films, Dharma Productions, Rajshri Productions and Excel Entertainment “tailor most of their films for a foreign audience.” Again, Adarsh denies this, and explains, “Any banner cannot afford to alienate the huge Indian market. Let me tell you that business done overseas, however good — and with some films it is exceptional cannot change the verdict on a film! The Indian business is what matters. Yes, maybe some filmmakers experiment with certain themes that our audiences don’t end up appreciating or identifying with, but in the end, it is the Indian business that matters!”

In most cases, therefore, there is a confluence of thoughts among viewers. “When 83 flopped over here, it underperformed even overseas. But while Happy New Year was a “plus” (it made nominal profits) film here, it did much better overseas,” notes Adarsh. He does accept that certain banners and filmmakers have a branding there. But again, it is about content. A film like Gangubai Kathiawadi (dismissed by some authorities as a flop in India in terms of return on investment — the vital index all through) was fabulous, especially because of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s branding.

In the olden days, Raj Kapoor was one filmmaker who had a ready audience (after Awara) in Russia and was also known elsewhere. His films like Jagte Raho (1956) and Mera Naam Joker (1970), which failed miserably at home, did super business overseas, while his Indian blockbusters Sangam, Bobby and Ram Teri Ganga Maili went on to do epic business abroad. Shaikh points out, “I remember when Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom ended, he still continued to be a powerful force overseas for some years!”

In the final analysis, we come across certain indisputable facts:

90 percent of Hindi films abroad are watched by the Indian diaspora (Indians, Pakistanis and a few other South Asians) alone. The markets for a global audience have still not opened up.

Content rules, and family entertainment with songs, dances and stars are top priority.

And yet, “class” content like Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna or My Name Is Khan, which are rejected outright in India, are also liked.

Certain stars and top filmmakers do have a branding and higher appeal there. Still, an Aamir Khan can be rejected for Laal Singh Chaddha after a good opening, and Shamshera can be junked despite the Yash Raj Films-Ranbir Kapoor combination.

The biggest truth is that foreign business, in the final analysis, cannot change the verdict on a film, business-wise. Ultimately, there is just a quantitative difference.

And, as always, a few exceptions prove the rule!

Kaun Banega Crorepati kicked off season 14 recently in a rather celebratory manner. Readers would be aware that the show is famous for its quizzes but it is also known for the kind of stories that people narrate to the host Amitabh Bachchan about his fandom and the things they have done for the superstar. Similarly, a recent contestant named Professor Dhulichand, who is making news for reaching upto Rs. 75 lakhs with his intelligence, spoke about one such instance which pushed him to boycott Amitabh Bachchan.

When Professor Dhulichand was invited to the hot seat, he shared an experience he had undergone during the release of Muqaddar ka Sikandar. He also added that the superstar owed him a debt of Rs. 10. Recalling the incident, Dhulichand said, “When I was studying in college, I used to survive each month with bare minimum amount. The financial situation back then was not good at home. Despite that, I took Rs.10 to watch your film on its first day. I planned to use it for the ticket, to pay the cycle stand, and to buy tea, snacks as well as return home.”

After waiting in the queue for hours, Dhulichand revealed that when his turn came, the mob situation worsened leading to a stampede and it was so bad that the police had to intervene. In fact, the professor also mentioned that he got lathi charged during the same. Amidst the chaos, Mr. Agarwal fell to the ground and sustained a head injury. It was then that he decided that he would never watch an Amitabh Bachchan movie.

Needless to say, the legendary actor was quite touched by the story. Not only did he return the debt of Rs. 10 as Rs. 20 with interest but also promised Dhulichand that he would watch the movie with him.

Needless to say, his video received a reaction from the ‘Mashooka’ as well as her real life ‘Mashook’. San Diego Comic-Con 2022 is in full swing, and Warner Bros.’ panels began with full swing. The studio unveiled the first trailer of Zachary Levi starrer Shazam! Fury Of The Gods at Hall H amid massive audience.

“I missed you guys so dang much, I can’t even tell you,” said Levi said at the panel at SDCC. The trailer teased Zachary Levi's Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who transforms into an adult superhero and is at therapist already trying to understand where he stands when it comes to superheroes. Together with his foster siblings, he is set to fight against the villains Daughters of Atlas, led by franchise newcomer Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu playing Calypso. Newcomer Rachel Zegler essays the role of Antaeus and their first looks are unveiled in the trailer.

“Zach, darling, sweetheart, I had such a marvelous time kicking the shit out of you,” Mirren quipped who joined the panel through zoom video call.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which continues the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!,” is transformed into his adult Super Hero alter ego, Shazam. The film stars returning cast members Zachary Levi as Shazam; Asher Angel as Billy Batson; Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman; Adam Brody as Super Hero Freddy; Ross Butler as Super Hero Eugene; Meagan Good as Super Hero Darla; D.J. Cotrona as Super Hero Pedro; Grace Caroline Currey as Mary Bromfield / Super Hero Mary; Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley; Ian Chen as Eugene Choi; Jovan Armand as Pedro Pena; Marta Milans as Rosa Vasquez; Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez; with Djimon Hounsou as Wizard. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which is set to open in theaters internationally beginning 15 December 2022 and in North America on December 21, 2022.

When Karan Johar asked Akshay Kumar, "Do you think you combatted nepotism?" He said he didn't even what the word meant when he came in the industry. "I didn't even know meaning of nepotism. I asked my wife (Twinkle Khanna) then she explained it to me. Then I saw the whole fighting. When I came in the industry, I had no idea, I just wanted to earn money."

Akshay Kumar recalled he was getting paid Rs. 5,000 for teaching martial arts but when he got an ad shoot, he got paid Rs. 21,000 for two hours of work.

On the work front, Akshay Kumar will next be seen in Aanand L Rai’s next directorial, Raksha Bandhan. The film will release on 11th August.

Season 7 of Koffee With Karan kicked off on Disney+ Hotstar with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt followed by actresses Janhvi Kapoor and Sara Ali Khan as guests in the second episode. As the buzz around the show increases, the Koffee With Karan couch saw Akshay Kumar and Samantha Ruth Prabhu bring lively potboiler of glamour, secrets and witty one-liners.

On the talk show, the actor spoke about doing a 7-hero film once and it was Jaani Dushman. Talking about how his character comes back from dead and how hilarious it was see it, the actor said, “I was working on a per-day basis and there was a scene where the villain kills me and I am dead. I got to know that the other hero who is going to be acting now, got stuck in New York and could not make it in time. I went up to the director and asked him if I had to come back again.” The actor was Sunny Deol and he was stuck due to some health issue.

“You won’t believe it, today where I stay, I needed money to buy that place, and Jaani Dushman got me the money to buy my house,” he quipped. Karan and Samantha could not stop laughing.

It seems that the promotions for the Akshay Kumar starrer have kicked off in full swing as they are gearing up for a release next month. And their recent promotional leg was in this traditional quaint city in Rajasthan. While exploring the locales, it seems that Bhumi also decided to try her hands at their cuisine and shared a photo of Thali she was enjoying at a restaurant.

In a recent photo shared by Bhumi Pednekar, we saw the actress posing with a massive thali that consisted of some authentic Rajasthani delicacies, sweets for desserts, and side dishes as a part of thali. Needless to say, the actress looked excited to enjoy the wholesome meal. She shared a series of photos with a quirky caption that said, “Image No. 3 is proof I finished that thali all by myself ???? Also wrapped another film, toh treat toh banti hai. #RajasthaniThali” The third photo in the series featured the actress almost asleep on the restaurant couch after completing the meal.

Followed by the funny photo, many of her friends from the industry commented on the post. While Dia Mirza exclaimed, “No way,” Bhumi’s sister Samiksha Pednekar wrote, “All this food!! I’ve never wanted to be in Jodhpur this bad ????????” Many of her other friends also dropped some heart emojis on this post. On the other hand, Aanand L. Rai was the one who set the record straight saying, “Last thali teri nahi hai… mujhe pata hai ????” (the plate in the last photo is not yours, I know).

Speaking of the film Raksha Bandhan, as the name suggests, the film talks about the sibling bond that five sisters have with their brother Akshay Kumar. Bhumi plays the role of the actor’s childhood sweetheart. Directed by Aanand L. Rai, the film will release on August 11, marking the occasion of Rakhi celebrations.

A day ago, South industry woke up to the shocking demise of popular actor-filmmaker Pratap Pothen. The 70 year old actor, who has acted in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and even Hindi films, has several films to his credit and has worked with some of the biggest names in the Indian entertainment industry. In a statement given by his wife, the actor-filmmaker, passed away in his sleep due to cardiac arrest in Chennai.

Followed by the news, several members from the film fraternity extended their condolences to the family and even went on to pay tribute to the renowned artist. From Kamal Haasan to Prithviraj Sukumaran to Suriya, and R Madhavan, many of them took to social media to express their grief and shock over the news.

Kamal Haasan paid tribute in Tamil. His Instagram post reminisced about the times they worked together for the 1989 film Vettri Vizhaa, which was also directed by Pratap Pothen. His post read, “Friend Pratap Bothan continued his avid literary reading and unquenchable interest in art films. I have seen during the 'Vetrivizha' period that he is also an expert in successfully directing lively films. Tribute to him.”
