At least 40 people have drowned in a boat accident on a river in northwest Nigeria, said President Bola Tinubu on Sunday. The accident happened in Zamfara state, as farmers were trying to get to their land, said Tinubu in a statement. The president promised support for the victims and directed emergency agencies to assess the incident. Yazid Abubakar, a police spokesperson in Zamfara, told The Associated Press the accident happened on Saturday and that five people were rescued, but 40 are still missing. Home textiles major Welspun Living Ltd on Wednesday reported a 14.3 per cent increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 185.95 crore in the June 2024 quarter. The company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 162.73 crore in the quarter last fiscal, Welspun Living said in a regulatory filing. Consolidated revenue from operations stood at Rs 2,536.49 crore compared to Rs 2,184.05 crore in the year-ago period, it added. Total expenses in the first quarter were higher at Rs 2,335.11 crore against Rs 1,998.65 crore in the corresponding period a year ago, the company said. Domestic rating agency India Ratings and Research on Monday said there was a marginal uptick in the corporate downgrade-to-upgrades ratio in FY24, when compared to the year-ago period. There were 312 upgrades as compared to 114 downgrades in FY24, which resulted in the ratio between the two coming at 0.37 per cent, which is marginally higher when compared to the 0.26 per cent in FY23, the city-based agency said. "The pace of upgrades moderated while at the same time downgrades increased, both of them marginally by about one percentage point," its head of credit policy group Arvind Rao said. However, the ratio at 0.37 per cent is still low, the agency said, attributing the performance of its rated entities to the continuing Indian growth story. At a time when Nepal is facing a power crisis, India on Friday renewed the agreement to export electricity to Nepal for the next three months. Under the agreement, which was to expire on March 31, Nepal can import a total of 554 MW electricity from India between 6 am and 6 pm. Nepal's domestic electricity production currently stands at around 1,200 MW while the country's demand for electricity is 1,800 MW to 2,000 MW during this period. Nepal is experiencing a shortage of electricity as most of the domestic power plants in the country are based on a run-of-the-river system and during winter, there is less water in the rivers.
